Network Support Specialist

The University of Pikeville is actively seeking a dynamic and committed professional to serve in the role of Network Support Specialist. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the enterprise network, and will serve as a backup to the system administrators.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software or other network problems and replace defective components when necessary.
  2. Manage campus routers, wireless access points, access switches, firewall, and other network equipment.
  3. Generate patch management reports for campus network equipment. Maintain current known stable releases of firmware/software updates on equipment.
  4. Manage VoIP telephone system including conference bridges, moves, adds, changes, long distance, call routing, etc.
  5. VLAN/WLAN Configuration and Management.
  6. Assist with management of the security camera system.
  7. Generate network statistics and reporting.
  8. Monitor network status using enterprise network monitor software.
  9. Build and revamp existing network infrastructure for redundancy and resiliency to meet University DR and business continuity plans.
  10. Work with team members and third-party vendors for cable installation and termination.
  11. Maintains current knowledge of wiring standards including EIA/TIA T568A/B, as well as national, state, and local fire code.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with co-workers, faculty, staff, and students in order to plan, organize, and implement daily workflow and projects, as well as to train, inform, and assist with any inquiries. These relationships are maintained through e-mail, telephone, and person-to-person contact.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field preferred or equivalent work experience. 
  • At least 3 years of experience with network or systems administration.
  • Knowledge and adherence to ITIL best practices for execution of Incident/Request/Change Management.
  • Must have experience working with office equipment, e.g. MS and MAC systems, servers, printers, routers.
  • Routing Protocol Expertise.
  • Understanding of DNS topology and concepts.
  • Understanding of IP Address Structure.
  • Ability to organize and plan work independently as well as in a team atmosphere.
  • Related certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, CCNA, CCNP, etc. are preferred but not required.
  • Experience working with Aruba and Cisco networking equipment preferred.
