Medical Librarian/KYCO Liaison

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE), the Leading University in Central Appalachia, is currently seeking a creative, skilled, and service-oriented colleague for the position of Medical Librarian to work collaboratively with other librarians. This position has overall responsibilities to conduct assessment and provide specialized information services and instruction to students, faculty, researchers, and clinicians in the health sciences areas, with a particular focus on the field of optometry. This position will function as the Liaison to the Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO).


Public Services and Reference

  1. Provides reference consultations and assists library users with research inquiries.
  2. Cooperate and cross-train with the liaison to KYCOM in order to provide the best service to all health science students.
  3. Provide reference assistance through telephone, email, online chat, and in-person.
  4. Provide reference assistance for students on off-campus rotations.
  5. Works with preceptors to provide necessary information and services.
  6. Manage and develop research guides for health sciences material.

Instruction and Assessment

  1. Provide training and instruction in the use of health sciences-related resources for both the Kentucky College of Optometry and the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine.
  2. Provide workshops to faculty as needed.
  3. In conjunction with library staff, conduct studies to determine the effectiveness of library resources and identify potential new products and services for the library.
  4. Train staff and other librarians in health science resources as needed.
  5. Document and report statistics and assessment measures.  

Development/Departmental Liaison

  1. Serves as the primary liaison to KYCO faculty, staff, and administration.
  2. Work with KYCO faculty and library director in the selection, de-selection, and updating of resources in all formats.


  1. Attend conferences, workshops, seminars, and/or classes to stay current with developments in the field of vision science and library services.
  2. Maintain awareness of trends in technology, instructional design, and library services through professional readings, conferences, and workshops.
  3. Stay current with best practices in assessment.
  4. Serve on library, university, or consortium committees as assigned.


  1. Work Saturdays and Sundays as needed.
  2. Open and close the library as assigned.
  3.  Work a minimum of one night a week in rotation with other librarians.
  4. Other duties and special projects as assigned.


Position requires daily contact with faculty, staff, students, alumni, community patrons, and supervisor in order to answer directional and technical questions, handle problems, address issues, assist with academic research, and discuss work-related issues. These relationships are maintained through email, telephone, and person-to person contact.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • An ALA accredited master’s degree in Library or Information Science with a minimum of 3 years increasingly responsible library experience.
  • Excellent technical and communication skills.
  • Must be familiar with both Mac and Windows platforms.
  • Must have experience working with library and office equipment, e.g. projector, sympodium, printer, copier, fax machine, barcode scanner, desensitizer/resensitizer.
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Must be familiar with ILS (Voyager), ILL Systems (Docline/OCLC), and Libguides.
  • Must be familiar with conducting research on the Web, as well as creating online travel arrangements and ordering office supply online.
  • Must have experience with computer maintenance.
