IWS - Student Affairs - Residence Life, New Resident Assistant - 21-22 (Spring)

The Resident Assistant is assigned to a floor section and is responsible, with the other residence hall staff, for fostering a cooperative and considerate community environment which contributes to the academic and personal growth and success of each resident.

I. Requirements

1. Clear student conduct record at UPIKE 2. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher to apply and must maintain during period of employment 3. Applicants must possess a minimum of two (2) full semesters of on-campus living experience prior to the first full semester of employment

II. Qualifications 1. Leadership potential 2. Personal qualities; i.e. maturity, self-esteem, self-reliance, motivation, initiative, high energy level, and responsibility 3. Strong interpersonal communication skills

III. Terms of Employment

1. Period of Employment: The period of employment is for the spring semester. Specific dates are indicated in the RA Expectations of Employment document each RA will sign when hired. All RAs are required to assist with the opening and closing of the halls for each semester and for all vacation periods. Continuation of employment is dependent upon positive periodic evaluations by the Office of Residence Life professional staff and demonstration of continued enthusiasm for the position. RAs are expected to be the first residents in the halls and the last residents out of the halls.

2. Living Arrangements: RAs will be assigned to a staff room and, when space allows, will be given a private room at no additional cost. Where there is an excess housing demand, the Department will make every effort to allow RAs their first choice of a roommate.

3. Compensation: Compensation for the RA position is a stipend that is tiered depending upon the number of semesters an RA has served (see table below). This stipend can either be paid to students in bimonthly increments or applied to their student accounts to cover the cost of their student room. 4. Time Commitments: • Workload- It is fully understood that student life work in residence halls is not easily translated into hours worked per day or week because of the nature of the work. An RA can expect to be on duty on a regular basis, and should be accessible to students in the halls most evenings. An RA should also expect to spend, on average, one night per week and two - three weekends per month on duty. This varies according to staff size in each building. Other responsibilities may be determined by the Residence Life professional staff. • Course Load: RAs are required to carry a minimum of 12 credit hours. An academic load of 17 hours or less is recommended, but not required. Failure to maintain full time status could result in probation or termination. • Additional Work & Extracurricular Activities: It is important that RAs remember that their position is demanding and thus their other activities will have to be limited. RAs are not permitted to hold other compensatory positions without the approval of the Residence Life professional staff. RAs seeking to student teach, intern, or play sports should notify the Residence Life professional staff well in advance.

5. Academic Performance: All RAs must maintain a cumulative 2.5 grade point average throughout employment. Failure to maintain a 2.5 GPA could result in probation or termination.

6. Evaluation: Formal written evaluation of RAs by their direct supervisors will occur in November and April. Informal evaluation or feedback will occur continuously as part of the supervision process.

IV. Responsibilities

1. Community Development • Develop a sense of unity among residents by facilitating the development of relationships. • Create a friendly, respectful, and considerate living environment. • Solicit suggestions from floor/building residents and plan programs according to resident interests and needs. • Plan and implement programs, completing the required expectations as set forth during fall training. Submit completed programming paperwork in the expected time frame. • Create door tags for residents as well as monthly bulletin boards. • Hold regular floor meetings to disseminate information, discuss concerns, and collect feedback. • Communicate information to residents in a timely and appropriate manner.

2. Resident Relationships • Establish positive relationships with all residents of the hall, demonstrating availability and approachability to residents. • Learn the names of all residents on the floor. • Be aware of attitudes, possible adjustment problems and behavioral patterns of residents. • Meet with residents who are experiencing concerns (roommate conflicts, personal issues, etc.) and refer them to the appropriate resources
