Development Advisor

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) is actively seeking candidates for a full-time, temporary Development Advisor position in the Upward Bound program until May 31, 2022. This position is a federally funded TRIO Program and all positions are contingent upon sufficient funding. The Development Advisor is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and implementing programs, activities and services that promote and enhance postsecondary educational and career opportunities for the students participating in the Upward Bound project. This position will ensure the full implementation of the planned activities, services, and programs for an at-risk, high school student population from a wide geographical range of five school districts consisting of 11 separate target schools. 


  1. Facilitating or co-facilitating the career work-study program, including leading career exploration workshops. 
  2. Facilitating or co-facilitating the bridge program, including helping high school seniors to complete financial aid and scholarship applications. 
  3. Recruiting, interviewing, and recommending new students into the program, visiting participants monthly at their schools, planning and supervising college and educational/cultural trips, planning summer activities, and hiring, training, and supervising summer staff. 
  4. Providing personal and career counseling services to high school project participants and planning and facilitating small peer-groups during the summer program. 
  5. Other related duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in human services, education, or related field is required. 
  • Minimum of one year experience in personal, academic, or career counseling/advising is also required. 
  • Ability to identify the barriers and disadvantages faced by area youth and the ability to relate effectively to campus personnel, and local secondary school personnel and students.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the purpose and mission of the Upward Bound program. 
  • Knowledge of the day-to-day operation of the Upward Bound program.
  • Knowledge of college admissions and financial aid procedures.
  • Knowledge of barriers low-income and first-generation students face.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a college access team.
  • Ability to operate computers efficiently. 
  • Ability to counsel/advise disadvantaged youth.
  • Ability to make sound, feasible decisions in a timely, independent manner.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a positive rapport with target school administration and counselors.
  • Analyze problems in an objective and consistent manner.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Ability to work long hours during summer residential program, weekend duties, overnight trips with Upward Bound participants.
  • Ability to travel to assigned work sites/schools is required.
