Public Safety Officer

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) is actively seeking candidates for a Public Safety Officer. Under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety, the Public Safety Officer will provide personal, and real property security for faculty, staff, students, and visitors of the university campus. Provides escort services, and other basic public assistance services as needed, and performs routine security and public safety patrol duties. Remains alert to emergency situations and provides first-line response, emergency management, and/or referral if required. Public Safety Officers are defined as emergency essential personnel and as such are subject to recall to help deal with any problems that arise.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides proactive controls campus wide on foot, in assigned motor vehicle, or other specialized vehicle to ensure; protection of life and property, prevention and suppression of crime, enforcement of campus regulations to include the student code of conduct, patrol parking lots, and respond to calls for service.
  • Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure security; uses University keys to open and close buildings; monitors closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities.
  • Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
  • Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information.
  • Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or EMS personnel, as required.
  • Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or security code violators; approaches suspicious persons and/or notifies police as appropriate; may confront violators, as required, until police arrive.
  • Performs periodic checks of interior, exterior and/or street lights to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.
  • Patrols and monitors assigned parking areas and/or parking garages to provide public security and assistance.
  • Maintains security controls for issued university keys and key cards; safeguards and controls issued university equipment.
  • Prepares routine, standardized reports.
  • May provide specialized security in a sports area or other complex operational area, requiring specific knowledge of the operating environment.
  • Participate with and assist Student Affairs with student behavior problems which may include counseling, mentoring and other activities to encourage appropriate student behavior.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Relationships: 

This position requires continuous contact with employees of the Public Safety department, University of Pikeville employees, students, parents, alumni, and the general public in order to direct and receive factual information for the benefit and protection of the people and property of the University of Pikeville. These relationships are maintained via e-mail, telephone, letters, and in-person contact.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED required, some (at least 1-2 years) of college preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a thorough background check. 
  • Requires 1 year of law enforcement or security experience.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
