Assistant or Associate Professor of Molecular Biology

The University of Pikeville is seeking a full-time, nine-month faculty appointment in the field of biology starting August 2022. Rank and salary will be based on qualifications. The University is comprised of an undergraduate college with a focus on the liberal arts and sciences, Osteopathic Medical School, and Optometry College. Applicants must have a strong commitment to innovative and exciting teaching at a comprehensive university setting and the ability to work effectively with others in a collegial environment dedicated to student learning. 

The ideal candidate will be a broadly trained molecular biologist with the ability and interest to teach genetics, molecular biology of the cell, development biology, introductory biology and upper-level classes in the applicant's field of interest. Depending on the candidate’s interest and background, the candidate may also develop and teach other classes that are part of the University’s course offerings in biology.

Responsibilities:

  1. Create and maintain an environment that is conducive to innovative teaching and active learning.
  2. Emphasize broadly-trained skills and a strong passion for excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship.
  3. Develop, communicate, and fulfill effective course learning outcomes.
  4. Teach courses utilizing no-cost course materials and Open Educational Resources (OERs). 
  5. Compose and publish syllabi containing the items listed in the approved syllabus rubric.
  6. Teaching courses for both majors and non-majors.
  7. Interest and experience in collaborating and supporting faculty/student research partnerships. 
  8. Advising students, providing service to the University community, assisting with departmental activities, and continuing scholarly growth and development.
  9. Ability to instruct classes using face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online modalities.
  10. Establish mutual respect with students through effective and timely communication including expectations, deadlines, and feedback on work completed.
  11. Maintain good working relationships with faculty and administration in all academic and non-academic sectors.
  12. Communicate effectively with constituents within the University, surrounding community, and State regarding the University. 
  13. Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) to support classroom instruction.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisor, students, faculty, and staff in order to disseminate necessary information and coordinate for daily operations. These relationships are maintained through person-to-person contact, phone, e-mail, and fax. 

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • A doctorate in Biology is required, and undergraduate teaching experience is desired.
  • Applicants with ABD status and within one year of completion will also be considered.
