Dean - College of Dental Health

The University of Pikeville seeks an inspirational, experienced, and visionary leader to serve as its founding Dean of the College of Dental Health. The Dean is the chief academic officer and administrative leader of the school and works collaboratively with faculty, students and staff to advance the University’s mission. In addition, we seek an innovative leader who can collaborate with rural dental clinics and has experience with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). The Dean shall be responsible for the development of the academic programs and policies in conjunction with the Provost and President and shall perform other such duties as the President or the Board of Trustees may direct from time to time.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and university colleagues to leverage and expand the College of Dental Health’s core strengths in research, in the training of the next generation of dentists, and patient care; seek opportunities for growth; gain buy-in and support for initiatives; and drive successful implementation.
  2. Lead the strategic planning, growth and development of the College.
  3. Work closely with the Provost, Deans across the campus, and other University entities to develop innovative collaborations.
  4. Administer the preparation of materials and documentation required for accreditation of the College by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
  5. Develop close, cooperative relationships with other leaders at the University of Pikeville to cultivate a community of mutual respect advanced by meaningful interaction.
  6. Build a strong network of community alliances and support and draw upon this network to shape the future of the College across its mission.
  7. Provide strong operational leadership and direction to the following key functions:
    ○ Academic Affairs
    ○ Research
    ○ Clinical Service
    ○ Administration and Planning
    ○ Communication
    ○ Students and Faculty Recruitment
    ○ Financial Management
    ○ Alumni and Community Outreach
    ○ Fundraising and Institutional Advancement, and
    ○ Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives
    ○ Faculty Development
    ○ Fundraising and Alumni Building
    ○ Assembly of Advisory Board
    ○ Student Affairs
  8. Support innovative research in ways that will advance science, dentistry and overall health.
  9. Ensure that the academic and patient care missions of the College are accomplished.
  10. Provide and support clinical dentistry leading to continued clinical excellence.
  11. Provide strong support to the educational mandate of the College, ensuring that the faculty, staff, students and the curriculum are of the highest quality, and thus continues to attract the best and the brightest and train the leaders of the future.
  12. Develop and improve infrastructure and strategically invest resources.
  13. Build diversity and multiculturalism within the faculty, staff, and student populations.
  14. Interact and cultivate an active interest in interacting with and cultivating valued relationships with key external stakeholders: alumni, donors, government, industry and community leaders.
  15. Provide strategic leadership and management of the College.
  16. Provide strategic oversight and expertise for all aspects of the College, including positive representation of the College within the University of Pikeville enterprise
    and beyond.
  17. Involved in recruitment and managing retention of key personnel for expansion and innovation of future clinical, research, and teaching endeavors.
  18. Continue to deliver excellence in dental education and promote student success.
  19. Recruit, develop, support, and retain exceptional and diverse faculty and staff.
  20. Engage and actively support organized dentistry at the local, state, and national level.
  21. Advocate for the College and enhance critical relationships across the University.
  22. Supervise the College’s service outreach throughout Appalachia, including underserved rural communities through activities such as providing patient care services, enhancing interdisciplinary and inter-professional collaborations, and developing and enhancing positive relationships with faculty and leaders from other academic institutions, alumni, industry, and government agencies.

Preferred Qualifications: 

The successful candidate for this position must be prepared and ready to accept the challenge of being a visionary leader, experienced administrator, collaborator, and partner. Therefore, the successful candidate must hold a D.D.S., D.M.D., or equivalent and have a proven record of academic leadership and experience in managing academic programs. In addition, it is preferred that the Dean possesses:

  • Proven ability to recruit, retain, and foster the professional careers of faculty and staff; 
  • Capacity to actively engage as well as listen to and understand the needs of faculty, staff, and students; 
  • Demonstrated success in facilitating change in a large, complex organization;
  • Experience in fundraising and strategic planning;
  • Proven commitment to creating an inclusive environment that embraces diversity;
  • Demonstrate commitment to quality in the delivery of academic programs;
  • Intellectual vision, high levels of energy, impeccable integrity, and other personal qualities that will inspire the College community to attain new levels of excellence;
  • Collaborative approach toward other campus leaders; and
  • The desire to improve the oral health of the state of Kentucky and beyond;
  • A history of demonstrating strong character, collegiality, and outstanding integrity.

Relationships: 

This position requires daily contact with co-workers, student workers, supervisor, college and university personnel, students, and alumni. These relationships are maintained through email, telephone, written, and person-to-person contact.

Education/Skill Requirements: 

  • Must have the credentials to receive a faculty appointment at the College.
  • Demonstrate leadership and administrative experience, abilities and qualities to manage academic and clinical programs at the professional doctoral level.
  • Continue to develop professionally and personally to grow their own leadership abilities.
  • A minimum of three years leadership experience as an academic program leader or dean at a school of dentistry and/or a teaching hospital or clinic where dental students practice clinical skills.
  • Experience managing budgets and personnel.
  • Ability to communicate and develop relationships/partnerships within the University and surrounding community.
  • Alignment with the University of Pikeville mission.
  • Ability to embrace diversity to best serve a growing higher education community.
  • Ability to promote and support excellence and innovation.
  • Must obtain a license to practice Dentistry within the State of Kentucky within 12 months of appointment to the Faculty.
