Disability Resource Coordinator

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE), is actively seeking candidates for a Disability Resource Coordinator who is responsible for providing student support services to the Disability Resource Center (DRC), and taking a lead role in developing, implementing and assessing reasonable accommodations.

Responsibilities:

  1. Evaluate students’ accommodation request and accompanying documentation to establish eligibility for departmental services.
  2. Meet with active and prospective students to discuss reasonable and effective use of accommodations.
  3. Educate students in self-advocacy to help implement reasonable accommodations.
  4. Maintain confidential files for all students registered with DRC for a minimum of three years after last date of enrollment.
  5. Identify and implement strategies to enhance office efficiency and improve student experience.
  6. Act as a liaison between students, faculty, and rehabilitation agencies, which involves monitoring disabled students progress at UPIKE.
  7. Promote DRC through attending orientation, open houses, departmental meetings, etc.
  8. Schedule and manage testing rooms for students using testing accommodations.
  9. Answer phone and questions around the accommodation process for students and supporters.
  10. Update office information on website.
  11. Send reminder emails regarding housing accommodation documentation updates.
  12. Other tasks as assigned.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisor, students, faculty and staff in order to advise and promote student success and retention. These relationships are maintained through email, fax, telephone, online meetings, and person-to-person contact.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • One to two years of professional experience as a service provider to students with disabilities.
  • Experience collaborating with other community agencies and organizations that provide disability support services.
  • Experience with computerized systems.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with applicable federal and state laws pertaining to persons with disabilities.
  • Experience working with diverse clients.
  • Experience in the acquisition, set-up, training and providing of support for assistive technologies.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

  • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended 2008 and all applicable state and federal disability statutes as well as general awareness of current literature, and legal cases in post-secondary education.
  • Knowledge of best practices as defined in the Association of Higher Education on Disability.
  • Knowledge of testing and measurements, the ability to interpret diagnostic assessments and documentation of cognitive, psychiatric and medical disorders, their impact on the provision of services to college students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of functional limitations of disabilities, their effect(s), understanding their academic implications, and the determination of the appropriate accommodation(s).
  • Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills. 
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
