Second Year Success Leaders play a vital role in fostering a supportive and engaging environment for fellow students. Responsibilities will primarily focus on organizing and hosting various small group activities and events to enrich the student experience. Second Year Success Leaders will be expected to possess strong communication skills, basic event planning abilities, and a passion for facilitating meaningful interactions among peers. By fostering collaboration between students, faculty, and staff, Second Year Success Leaders contribute to the creation of a vibrant and inclusive campus community that supports the holistic development of all its members.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Host Small Group Activities: Organize and facilitate small group activities designed to promote interaction, collaboration, and personal growth among students. (C, P, EI, CSD, CT, L)
    1. Recruit Attendees: Actively promote upcoming events and activities to fellow students through various channels, including CampusGroups, social media, flyers, and word-of-mouth, to ensure student participation. (C, EI, T)
    2. Prepare for Events: Coordinate logistics for each event, including securing necessary resources, setting up event space, and arranging any required materials or equipment. (P, CSD, CT, L)
    3. Collaborate closely with faculty and staff members to enhance the small group engagement opportunities available to students. This collaboration is essential for creating a holistic and supportive learning environment that integrates both academic and extracurricular activities. Second Year Success Leaders will: (TW, EI)

                                              i.      Opportunities for Collaboration: Proactively seek out opportunities to involve faculty and staff in small group engagement initiatives, such as workshops, panel discussions, or guest speaker events.

                                              ii.      Facilitate Communication: Serve as a liaison between student groups and faculty/staff members, effectively communicating the goals, objectives, and logistics of each engagement opportunity.

                                              iii.      Invite Participation: Extend invitations to faculty and staff to participate in small group activities as guest speakers, mentors, or facilitators, leveraging their expertise to enrich the student experience.

                                             iv.      Provide Support: Offer assistance and support to faculty and staff members who are interested in getting involved in student-led initiatives, including guidance on event planning, logistics, and promotion.

                                             v.      Promote Collaboration: Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-departmental cooperation by facilitating interactions between students, faculty, and staff from various academic backgrounds. (EI)

                                              vi.      Seek Feedback: Solicit feedback from faculty and staff members following their participation in small group engagement activities, using their insights to improve future events and initiatives. (C, P, L)

  1. Work with Second Year Experience staff and other Second Year Success Leaders to plan and host an event for second-year students each September. The goal of the event is to create awareness and build excitement about future Second Year Experience activities. (C, TW, L)
  2. Work with Second Year Experience staff and other Second Year Success Leaders to plan and host “Halfway to Graduation” Celebration each April. The event recognizes students who have completed half of the credit hours required for graduation. (C, TW, L)
  3. Facilitate Engagement: Create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere during events, encouraging active participation and fostering connections among attendees. (C, CT, EI, L)
  4. Provide Support: Offer assistance and guidance to attendees as needed, ensuring everyone feels valued and supported throughout events. (C, P)
  5. Complete Event Reports: Compile detailed reports summarizing each event, including attendance numbers, activities conducted, feedback received, and any notable outcomes or insights gained. (CSD, T)

 

Skills:[SJ4] 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential for effectively promoting events, facilitating discussions, and interacting with attendees.
  • A basic understanding of event planning principles, including logistical coordination, time management, and resource allocation, will be beneficial.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the ability to inspire and motivate others, foster teamwork, and resolve conflicts constructively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are crucial for building rapport, establishing connections, and creating a supportive community environment.
  • Effective organization and time management skills are necessary for coordinating multiple events, managing deadlines, and ensuring all tasks are completed efficiently.
  • The ability to adapt to changing circumstances, problem-solve on the fly, and remain flexible in the face of unexpected challenges is essential for success in this role.
