Open Rank Professor of Biology (Microbiology)

The University of Pikeville is seeking a full-time, nine-month faculty appointment in the field of biology starting August 2020. Rank and salary will be based on qualifications. The focus of this position will be to support growing programs in biology and nursing that prepares students for health-related careers as well as careers in biology. Applicants must have a strong commitment to innovative and exciting teaching in a small university setting and the ability to work effectively with others in a collegial environment dedicated to student learning. The ideal candidate will be a broadly trained microbiologist with the ability and interest to teach microbiology to majors and to nursing students. Depending on the candidate’s interest and background, the candidate may also teach other classes that are part of the University’s course offerings in biology.

Responsibilities:

  1. Emphasize broadly-trained biology skills and a strong passion for excellence in teaching.
  2. Create and maintain an environment that is conducive to learning.
  3. Develop, communicate, and fulfill effective course learning outcomes.
  4. Compose and publish syllabi containing the items listed in the approved syllabus rubric.
  5. Use effective teaching methodologies and regularly update course content.
  6. Teaching biology courses for both majors and non-majors.
  7. Teach courses in the biology curriculum and provide additional upper-division coursework in their specialty, as well as provide additional support for our growing and important pre-health professional programs.
  8. Advising students, providing service to the University community, assisting with departmental activities, and continuing scholarly growth and development.
  9. Ability to instruct classes using face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online modalities.
  10. Establish mutual respect with students through effective and timely communication including expectations, deadlines, and feedback on work completed.
  11. Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) to support classroom instruction.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisor, students, faculty, and staff in order to disseminate necessary information and coordinate for daily operations. These relationships are maintained through person-to-person contact, phone, e-mail, and fax. 

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • A doctorate is required, and undergraduate teaching experience is desired.
  • Minimum required English language skills are at the C1 level based on the Common European Language Framework.
  • Applicants with ABD status and within one year of completion will also be considered.
