Head Coach-Swim Team/YMCA Aquatics Director

The University of Pikeville and the Pikeville Area Family YMCA in Pikeville, Kentucky are seeking an innovative professional for Head Coach in Swim Team/Aquatics Director for the University’s Athletic Department and YMCA. The head coach/aquatics director will develop, support recruiting efforts, and coach the University of Pikeville Swim Team along with foster a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined while also managing a high-quality, member-focused aquatics program. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise the swimmers during practices, meets, and any other swim events.
  2. Creates an educational, safe and inviting experience for all participants.
  3. Initiates, develops and maintains positive relationships with participants.
  4. Monitors and helps nurture the academic progress of student athletes.
  5. Provides a safe, clean, and organized pool area.
  6. Assists in enforcing pool policies at all times.
  7. Writes the season plan and workout schedules for each season.
  8. Enters the swimmers into the swim competitions.
  9. Recruit students and maintain a complete roster for all levels.
  10. Ensures compliance with all UPIKE policies and procedures, ethical standards, and compliance with all federal, state and accreditation requirements. 
  11. Ensures compliance with all NAIA policies and procedures.
  12. Partners with other UPIKE faculty and staff to assure a vibrant perpetual student recruitment environment.
  13. Maintains an accurate account of team finances.
  14. Assists with organizing yearly summer swim camps/lessons.
  15. Recruiting lifeguards and staff appropriately.
  16. Develop and implement Emergency Management Plan around pool.
  17. Monitoring and management of pool.
  18. Maintain Aquatics budgets.
  19. Train for YMCA values and mission.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisors, student athletes, prospective student athletes, parents, and the general public in order to monitor players, give/receive information and feedback, schedule/coordinate games and practices, and direct workflow.

These relationships are maintained through e-mail, telephone, written communication, and person-to-person contact.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum two years in swim coaching experience.
  • Must be able to work under challenging physical conditions.
  • Willing to work late/flexible hours.
  • Must be CPR certified (or willing to obtain certification).
  • ASCA Level 2 Certification or higher.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including those with disabilities.
  • Understand how to work successfully as a team within all levels of the organization and know how to contribute to the mission of the college.
  • Ability to represent UPIKE in a professional manner and to conduct compelling and persuasive presentations to small and large groups.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet the requirements to drive a university vehicle. 
  • Must pass a criminal background check. 
  • Within 30 days of hire, completion of Child Abuse Prevention, Working with Program Volunteers, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens training.
  • Completion of YMCA aquatics training and trainer certifications.
