Student Success Advisor

The University of Pikeville is seeking applications for the full time position of Student Success Advisor. The Student Success Advisor is expected to promote academic, personal, and social/emotional success. The Student Success Advisor is also tasked with providing appropriate academic and intermediary support to incoming freshmen and transfer students with regards to all aspects of the student’s life. Advisors will provide comprehensive testing for first-time students, track student outcomes, administer the freshman and transfer advising process, provide advising and retention training to faculty and staff, as well as provide services and support for at-risk and underserved populations.

  1. Provide holistic, proactive academic advising for all first time students, focusing on incoming freshmen and new transfer students.
  2. Ensure awareness of student services available on campus and general University policies and procedures.
  3. Focus on implementing specific strategies to assist students with academic deficiencies and those with personal and/or family issues that affect their ability to persist.
  4. Assist the Director with coordination of student services functions and work with faculty and staff to increase retention.
  5. Coordinate student evaluations during the summer orientation sessions (GROWL). If needs are identified, work with faculty to find possible learning solutions or technology to assist students as they overcome these obstacles.
  6. Administer the College Student Inventory to incoming freshmen.
  7. Coordinates with the Disability Services Coordinator to arrange necessary accommodations for individual students.
  8. Make referrals to appropriate departments, including Student Services, Academic Affairs, Registrar, Business Office, Financial Aid, ACE, Disability Services, and monitor progress and resolutions.
  9. Maintain confidential records regarding interactions with students and prepare weekly and monthly reports to the Director regarding advising, evaluation and assessment of students.
  10. Assist with What’s Up Wednesdays and other student retention initiatives.
  11. Monitor student attendance and academic progress for students on academic probation.
  12. Plan and teach First Year Studies courses as needed.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Must be student oriented and have a compassionate nature with the ability to be empathetic to student needs.
  • Three years of experience in a student services/advising role is preferred.
  • Experience with helping at-risk students in a university environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with student success factors in higher education.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to creatively solve student issues in a timely manner.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and a clear driving record with the ability to drive a 12 passenger van as permitted by the university.
