Counselor/Psychologist

The University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky is currently seeking a Counselor/Psychologist to provide assessment, treatment, consultation and referral services regarding psychological, emotional and behavioral concerns of students, faculty and staff. In addition, the Counselor serves as an advocate for diversity and cross-cultural understanding to create a welcoming campus and serves as a mental health resource for the campus community.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide individual assessment, time-limited counseling, and group counseling to students seeking assistance with personal, psychological, or interpersonal problems. Provide support for students whose personal, psychological, or interpersonal concerns are interfering with their functioning as students and as members of the UPIKE community.
  2. Assist in assessing psychological withdrawals and leaves of absences.
  3. Provide crisis counseling and counseling services for students with acute psychological problems.
  4. Present psycho-educational programs to members of the UPIKE community to promote personal, interpersonal, and psychological health.
  5. Provide training and consultation on special programs or to particular student groups; develop training programs to promote staff development skills; participate in the training of residence hall and other appropriate staff.
  6. Provide consultation to faculty, staff, administrators, and other concerned individuals regarding issues of student mental health; support faculty and staff development programs related to the creation of a psychologically healthy community; support academic programs which contribute to the healthy development of students.
  7. Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful University community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the University. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.
  8. Assist in research relevant to assessing student needs and describing student behavior and culture; assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of counseling and other services and activities.
  9. Provide guidance, direction and clinical supervision to graduate clinical interns, as needed.
  10. Periodically, this position may be asked to lead or contribute to either ad hoc or ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities (e.g., serving on a committee or Staff Council, advising a student group or participating in focus groups). May include occasional evening/weekend activities.
  11. Abide by professional ethical guidelines and comply with federal and state law as it relates to the professional practice of psychology, social work or mental health counseling.

 Education/Sill Requirements:

  • Doctorate in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology (preferably APA-accredited) with internship in Professional Psychology (preferably APA-accredited), or Master's Degree (MSW, MA, MS, Med) in Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, or other related field is preferred
  • Licensure as a mental health provider in Kentucky (LCSW, MFT, or LPCC). License must be obtained before beginning employment.
  • Two to five years of previous experience in university counseling center or with young adults in a clinical setting is strongly preferred.
  • Keen sensitivity to issues of gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, socio-economic status
  • Skilled with techniques for counseling students with diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated history of positive working relationships and collaborative style, strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Experience providing service through outreach activities, program development, and committee involvement.
  • Clinical skills and proven managerial and supervisory skills with continuing interest in professional development around current practices and trends
  • Strong generalist with experience with common presenting concerns of college students, and experience and interest in providing group therapy
  • Demonstrated interest, expertise, and commitment to working with students from underrepresented groups through culturally-competent therapy and programming are required.
