Assistant Director of Bands

The University of Pikeville is currently seeking a qualified musician, conductor, innovator, and leader to be appointed as 12-month staff position of Assistant Director of Bands. This position will require working with the Director of Bands and band staff in the execution of the overall program. A large part of time will be dedicated to the new UPIKE marching band program, recruiting programs (on and off campus), and building the UPIKE wind band program. Further responsibilities include music classes, campus summer camps, and program management.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Director in all aspects of band rehearsal, administration, planning, creative work, and logistics.
  2. Assist with all college and departmental recruiting efforts i.e. Fall Hype Days, school recruitment visits, KMEA, and other creative recruitment opportunities as needed.
  3. Assist in driving a dynamic program into the future.
  4. Teaching an array of classes as needed by the program, i.e. basketball pep program, various courses within the minor and music emphasis.
  5. Organize and lead private lessons as needed, based on the instrumental background.
  6. Assess students, hold office hours, and engage in department and university service including establishing strong working relationships with colleagues, and representing the music department on and off campus.
  7. Ability to exercise good judgment in problem resolution situations.
  8. Implement practices and band development programs including majorettes & color guard.
  9. Organize & lead appropriate practices to prepare for school year activities & football season.
  10. Participate in community and campus life opportunities.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master' degree required.
  • Successful secondary instrumental band instruction.
  • Genuine interest in the Marching Arts with arranging and/or drill experience.
  • Wind/Brass lesson experience.
  • Conducting experience.
  • Understanding of recruiting and retention programs.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Doctorate degree.
  • Music education focused.
  • DCI and/or indoor marching arts experience.
  • Woodwind emphasis.
  • Guitar experience.
  • Collegiate teaching experience.
  • Interdisciplinary interests for Music Business (therapy, publishing, repair, retail, copyright/law, etc.).

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with faculty, staff, students, and community members in order to exchange information. These relationships are maintained through e-mail, telephone, and person-to-person contact.
