Director of Planned Giving

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) is actively seeking candidates for the Director of Planned Giving. This position is charged with fostering and securing planned, private financial gifts for the University. The primary responsibility is to meet or exceed annual and multi-year goals by identifying, cultivating, soliciting, securing, and stewarding prospects and donors for planned gifts.

This position is actively engaged in establishing long-term partnerships and strengthening existing relationships with alumni and supports of the University that will result in financial commitments for the benefit of the University.  

 Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working within a comprehensive institutional advancement – plan and execute a development plan, which includes identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of planned gifts, while working independently and/or collaboratively with volunteers.
  • Meet or exceed annual fundraising goals specified for amount raised, contacts, number of successful solicitations, etc.
  • Manage a major gift prospect base of between 125 to 150 qualified major gift prospects.
  • Conduct 150+ face-to-face visits per year.
  • Execute a minimum of 30 contacts per month with at least half comprising personal, direct contact. The Advancement Director must be able to travel 35% of the time, including overnight and occasional weekends.
  • Document contacts and adhere to policies and procedures for accepting, recording and acknowledging gifts.
  • Work closely with Alumni, Advancement and Public Affairs offices to maximize the fundraising potential of the university through participation in events or meetings.
  • Perform stewardship of endowment scholarships for designated college and/or program.

Essential Functions:

  • Results-oriented with professional characteristics that include leadership, commitment to confidentiality, flexibility, team-orientation, attention to detail and sensitivity to the stewardship of long-term relationships.
  • Ability to travel extensively with overnight stays and occasional weekends.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The Director of Planned and Major Giving holds primary responsibility for gifts of estates, trusts, and various other financial venues that reflect financial planning and deferred giving opportunities. The director serves as fundraising liaison for the University and prepares written materials, including having primary responsibility for training and support for other staff members working with donors on deferred and planned gifts such as trusts, charitable annuities, life insurance, wills, and bequests.
  • Enhance operational efficiency in planned giving. Ensure that all systems and processes from gift documentation to systems reporting are accurate and tailored to align with the needs of the Advancement Office.
  • Proactively identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards planned giving prospects and serves as the planned giving advisor for all University planned giving donors.
  • Enhance donor gift planning and giving by remaining current in areas of gift possibilities available and the current laws and regulations governing such gifts.
  • Develop effective marketing collateral and education materials for prospective donors and members of the advancement team.
  • Lead strategic efforts for planned giving pipeline movement, gift proposals, policy development, goal setting.
  • Manage planned giving prospects and donors; develop tracking systems and reports.
  • Direct and oversee planned giving prospect research.
  • Manage the solicitation process and pipeline for University donors.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.


Position requires daily contact with UPIKE faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, and community in order to develop possible grant opportunities.

Relationships are maintained through various modes of communication including, but not limited to, e-mail, telephone, written, and person-to-person contact.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Proven track record – multiple years of fundraising or sales experience required with demonstrated success at meeting annual and/or campaign goals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; negotiation skills, proven success in goal achievement.
