Optician/Optician Assistant

Description:

The University of Pikeville in Pikeville-Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO) seeks an experienced individual for the position of Optician/Optician Assistant. The Optician/Optician Assistant reports to the Clinic Operations Manager and is responsible for the optical dispensary services located at the College.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Interact with patients, physicians and other staff. We expect the person in this position to treat all persons with respect and dignity in a courteous manner, anticipating and fulfilling others’ needs while respecting their privacy.
  2. Perform all standard preliminary vision testing and demonstrate proficiency in basic/specialized ophthalmic pretesting, demonstrating knowledge of sub-specialties and what testing is needed for each patient. It is expected that this position will follow all safety procedures per protocol guidelines.
  3. Assists patients in the instruction of patients regarding the care and handling of contact lenses.
  4. Inventory, clean and stock rooms between patients and during down times to ensure all supplies, medication and equipment are readily available.
  5. Assists other staff members in the dispensing of eyewear including frame selection, lens selection, measurements, placing ophthalmic laboratory orders and verifying prescription eyeglasses.
  6. Other duties as assigned by the Clinical Operations Manager to provide efficient eyecare to our patients at the Kentucky College of Optometry Clinic.
  7. Measure clients’ bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring devices.
  8. Verify that finished lenses are ground to specifications.
  9. Prepare work orders and instructions for grinding lenses and fabricating eyeglasses.
  10. Assist clients in selecting frames according to style and color and ensure that frames are coordinated with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions.
  11. Maintain records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and payments.
  12. Perform administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, and performing simple bookkeeping.
  13. Recommend specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to suit client needs.
  14. Sell goods such as contact lenses, spectacles, sunglasses and other goods related to eyes in general.
  15. Heat, shape, or bend plastic or metal frames to adjust eyeglasses to fit clients, using pliers and hands.
  16. Evaluate prescriptions in conjunction with clients’ vocational and avocational visual requirements.
  17. Instruct clients in how to wear and care for eyeglasses.
  18. Determine clients' current lens prescriptions, when necessary, using lensometers or lens analyzers and clients’ eyeglasses.
  19. Show customers how to insert, remove, and care for their contact lenses.
  20. Repair damaged frames.
  21. Obtain a customer’s previous record or verify a prescription with the examining physician.
  22. Arrange and maintain displays of optical merchandise.
  23. Fabricate lenses to meet prescription specifications.
  24. Grind lens edges or apply coatings to lenses.
  25. Assemble eyeglasses by cutting and edging lenses, then fitting the lenses into frames.
  26. Supervise the training of student opticians.

Necessary Skills:

  1. Customer and Personal Service – Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  2. Sales and Marketing – Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling products or services. This includes marketing strategy and tactics, product demonstration, sales techniques, and sales control systems.
  3. Mathematics – Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  4. Clerical – Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.

Relationships:

Qualifications:

  • Kentucky Ophthalmic Dispensers or Ophthalmic Apprentice License, or 2 years’ experience in an ophthalmic dispensary.

Area Coordinator

The Area Coordinator is a twelve-month, live-in position with supervisory responsibilities for multiple residence halls (ranging from 200-400 residents) and a staff of paraprofessionals (Resident Assistants).

Description:

The Area Coordinator is a twelve-month, live-in position with supervisory responsibilities for multiple residence halls (ranging from 200-400 residents) and a staff of paraprofessionals (Resident Assistants). Responsibilities include overall management of residential community that facilitates a vibrant student experience grounded in intentional student development practice. Reports to Director of Residence Life.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provide live-in residence hall management and deliver an array of engaging, educational programs for residential community; work out of office in residence hall while staying engaged with central office.
  2. Participate in 24-hour on-call duty rotation including night, weekend and holidays utilizing a university cell phone, responding to calls for assistance and emergency situations.
  3. Participate in the hiring, training, and supervision of Resident Assistant (RA) staff; provide direct supervision for RA staff.
  4. Serve as a retention agent and intervene with students on behalf of the institution when students present risks to their retention or persistence. Refer students to campus resources as needed and actively contribute to the university-wide retention initiatives.
  5. Maintain records and submit appropriate paperwork for facilities concerns. Includes overseeing check-in and check-out procedures, damage charges, key distribution and collection and using online database system to track facilities concerns. Maintain an awareness of the building condition, safety and security, furnishings, and other equipment; provides leadership for resolving concerns.
  6. Serve as a residence life liaison with other campus agencies, including Facilities, Public Safety, Aramark (both Housekeeping and Facilities), Athletics, International Programs, Career and Professional Development, Student Activities, etc.
  7. Adjudicate student conduct within assigned residential community; Uphold and interpret the rights and responsibilities of all students through consistent and fair policy enforcement.
  8. Provide support to Director for central office processes as is needed; take on other office duties as assigned by Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.

The University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky, seeks a dynamic and creative professional interested in establishing, directing, and managing the University’s contemporary vocal music program. The Director is responsible for the overall program of vocal music at the University, providing students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular vocal activities and ensure compliance with all state and university requirements. The position also includes teaching two didactic courses in the music area and providing support for private voice lessons. The expectations of the Contemporary Vocal Music Director include: commitment to the mission of the University of Pikeville, scheduling, conducting practices, travel planning, recruiting, fundraising, teaching, budgeting, and completion of any duties assigned by the supervisor.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Recruit students for the development of a show choir program and other contemporary vocal music groups.
  2. Provide artistic and musical direction for the show choir and other musical groups.
  3. Meet assigned recruiting goals for each year.
  4. Manage program budget and scholarship budget.
  5. Teach as needed in the music program.
  6. Recruit and teach private voice students in support of music minor.
  7. Design show choir performances.
  8. Select appropriate music and modify musical arrangement as needed.
  9. Monitor the academic progress of students in the contemporary vocal music programs.
  10. Ensure eligibility of students in the contemporary vocal music programs.
  11. Retain and graduate a satisfactory number of students.

Education/Skill Requirements: 

  • Master's degree required. Doctoral degree will be preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Formal vocal training
  • Expertise and/or familiarity with several different contemporary musical styles
  • Familiarity with contemporary harmony and music theory
  • Piano skills for basic accompaniment of students is a plus; preference will be given to candidates with coaching experience
  • Ability to communicate/demonstrate/coach choreography for a show choir is desirable

The University of Pikeville is seeking an energetic and sales-oriented recruiter to focus on prospective students who have a desire to enroll in a variety of online programs. Reporting to the Director of Admissions, the Admissions Counselor for Online Programs will identify, engage and support prospective students in all phases of the recruitment/enrollment process to advance the strategic online enrollment goals.  Working over the phone and with various other forms of communication, this professional will introduce students to the exciting online learning experience within our various colleges. Additionally, the Admissions Counselor of Online Programs will function as a liaison with Student Affairs to ensure the best possible student experience.

Responsibilities:

  1. Act as the main point of contact for perspective and enrolled online students.
  2. Provides timely information via email, phone and texts.
  3. Troubleshoots student support issues and coordinates solutions across online service and business units.
  4. Produces weekly applicant and inquiry reports.
  5. Meets with business and industry leaders in the immediate area to develop demand for expertise derived from our online program options.
  6. Becomes a functional user of our CRM (Fireworks) to develop and deliver a communications flow to online students and other constituents.
  7. As a member of a high-performing team, meets performance goals and generates referral activity.
  8. Guides prospective students through the admissions processes by clearly communicating program requirements, transfer credits, payment options, time commitment, technology requirements and student support services.
  9. Introduces new students to the online classroom and Learning Management System (LMS).

  12. Participates in online College Fair events.

Relationships:

The University of Pikeville, the Leading University in Central Appalachia, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). Located in the heart of Appalachia, the University of Pikeville is committed to offering a broad liberal arts and health professions education. The Dean of CAS will report directly to the University Provost and is the chief academic and administrative officer for the College. The Dean will provide strategic leadership and vision for the academic programs and will foster a high-quality environment of academic teaching, service, and scholarship to strengthen partnerships within and outside of CAS.

The Dean will oversee faculty recruitment, development and evaluation; fund- and friend-raising; community outreach/collaboration; budget management and resource allocation; program and curriculum development/assessment; and regional, state and national accreditation.

The position will also lead development of new, and enhancement of existing, academic programs in addition to supporting the needs of students and faculty. With visionary leadership and an innovative spirit, the Dean will play an integral role in collaborating with other stakeholders to ensure the University of Pikeville achieves its mission of serving central Appalachia.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee personnel matters involving academic and non-academic employees within the College of Arts and Sciences including recruiting qualified candidates, conducting personnel evaluations, and preparing long-term professional development plans with members of the faculty.
  2. Provide the Provost with an annual review of faculty and staff including individualized professional development plans.
  3. Make recommendations to the Provost regarding personnel appointments and re-appointments, promotions, and dismissal if necessary.
  4. Prepare and manage faculty workload plans.
  5. Articulate budgetary needs of the College and manage the allocation and expenditure of resources.
  6. Be engaged in teaching as a teaching faculty member.
  7. Represent the University and the College of Arts and Sciences in recruiting efforts and attend various academic and social functions both on and off campus.
  8. Promote interdisciplinary collaboration, cooperation, and scholarly activity.

While most classes are offered face-to-face, the University does offer classes through other modalities including hybrid and fully online. Each semester, we may need part-time instructors in the clinical or skills lab for:

  • Fundamentals of Nursing
  • Medical-Surgical Nursing
  • Maternity Nursing
  • Mental Health Nursing
  • Agency Preceptor Coordination
  • Remedial assistance such as tutoring of nursing students

The adjunct instructor will serve under the supervision of specific full-time nursing faculty and the Dean of the Elizabeth Akers Elliott School of Nursing while accepting the following responsibilities:   

  1. Provide instruction for the assigned course, including clinical supervision, patient assignments, clinical paperwork, pre-post conference, assisting with return skill demonstration, and fostering clinical decision-making.
  2. Provide clinical evaluation as required and meet one-on-one with students to strengthen clinical decision-making.
  3. Maintain close communication with the course leader or supervising faculty.
  4. Maintain health records, an unencumbered KY RN license, and other documentation as required by the Elliott School of Nursing or health agencies.
  5. Responsibilities for all other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Requirements:

  1. Must have a minimum of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree and clinical experience within the last two years.
  2. Must have excellent organizational, communication, teaching and clinical decision-making skills.
  3. Prior clinical instruction or teaching experience is strongly preferred.
  4. Prior experience with electronic health documentation and simulation is strongly preferred.

Courses are offered during the day. Clinical instruction is offered during the day and occasionally in the evening. Travel is required and is the responsibility of the instructor.
