Head Wrestling Coach

The University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky, is seeking an innovative professional for Head Coach in Wrestling for the Athletic Department. This is an exceptional opportunity for a motivated and accomplished leader to join an innovative Athletics Department valuing academic and athletic experiences. This position reports to the Director of Athletics. The head coach will develop, support recruiting efforts, and coach the University of Pikeville Wrestling Team.

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise, coach, and instruct student-athletes during practice and competitions.
  2. Teach/coach student-athletes the fundamentals and techniques of the sport.
  3. Conduct video analysis and instruction as a teaching and preparation tool.
  4. Initiates, develops and maintains positive relationships with participants.
  5. Arrange a competitive schedule, within institutional guidelines and budget, and manage all aspects of team travel.
  6. Identify, evaluate and recruit potential team members to UPIKE Wrestling.
  7. Retain current UPIKE students as team members.
  8. Meet a minimum roster size each year (20 in first season).
  9. Ensures eligibility of student-athletes in the wrestling program and monitors their academic program.
  10. Recruit highly skilled and academically qualified student-athletes and develop and implement strategies for motivating student-athletes to perform at their highest level.
  11. Manage the annual program budget, within institutional budget policies and guidelines.
  12. Ensures compliance with all UPIKE policies and procedures, ethical standards, and compliance with all federal, state and accreditation requirements. 
  13. Partners with other UPIKE faculty and staff to assure a vibrant perpetual student recruitment environment.
  14. Represents the University at conferences, regional, state and national meetings relating to wrestling.
  15. Works with the SID to provide accurate data for individual and team accomplishments, as well as game scores.
  16. Expectations: Positive attitude and commitment. Participation in campus organizations and activities. 
  17. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with coaches, student athletes, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff in order to communicate information about the athletics program at the University of Pikeville. These relationships are maintained through e-mail, telephone, and person-to-person contact.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • Minimum two years in wrestling coaching experience. Experience in recruiting.
  • Must be CPR certified (or willing to obtain certification).
  • Experience with NAIA programs.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including those with disabilities.
  • Understand how to work successfully as a team within all levels of the organization and know how to contribute to the mission of the university.
  • Ability to represent UPIKE in a professional manner and to conduct compelling and persuasive presentations to small and large groups.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet the requirements to drive a university vehicle. 
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
