Associate Dean for Academic Affairs - College of Dental Health

The University of Pikeville seeks an experienced, visionary leader to serve as its Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (ADAA) in the College of Dental Health. The ADAA is the chief academic officer of the College of Dental Health providing leadership, strategic direction, oversight and management of all educational programs at the College of Dental Health. The ADAA works closely with the Dean to determine the philosophy of education for the pre-doctoral curriculum. Working with college leaders and consultants, the ADAA develops the initial curriculum plan for the College of Dental Health and is responsible for managing the predoctoral dental education program leading to the DMD degree.

The ADAA works closely with the Dean and the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs to develop the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum. The ADAA works closely with consultants and college leaders to ensure initial accreditation and ongoing compliance with accreditation standards.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Provide leadership and oversight for the pre-doctoral educational program.
  2. Assist Dean in developing the philosophy of education and vision for the predoctoral educational program.
  3. Provide leadership, strategic direction, oversight and management of all college educational programs to ensure excellence in the academic program.
  4. Implement and assess the strategic plan for the pre-doctoral programs of the college.
  5. Work with the Dean, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and consultants to prepare for initial accreditation of the College by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
  6. Work with the Dean, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and consultants to ensure continued accreditation of the College by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
  7. Lead the accreditation self-study processes and site visits.
  8. Recruit and manage retention of key personnel for the Office of Academic Affairs.
  9. Manage the operations of the Office of Academic Affairs.
  10. Provide oversight to ensure compliance with regulations related to the college’s educational programs.
  11. Create and continually update the DMD student handbook.
  12. Enforce the policies and procedures in the DMD student handbook.
  13. Assemble the initial curriculum committee and serve as ex-officio member.
  14. Assemble the Academic Performance Committee and serve as chairman.
  15. Assist with pipeline, recruitment and admissions work of the College.
  16. Create and implement a plan to promote student academic success.
  17. Serve as an advocate for student learning.
  18. Work with Associate Deans of Academic Affairs from other college at the University of Pikeville to collaborate and share ideas.
  19. Continue to grow and develop professionally to ensure excellence in leadership.
  20. Maintain a positive representation of the College within the University of Pikeville enterprise and beyond.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate for this position must be prepared and ready to accept the challenge of being an academic leader, experienced administrator, collaborator, and partner. Therefore, the successful candidate must hold a D.D.S., D.M.D., or equivalent and have a proven record of academic leadership. In addition, it is preferred that the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs possesses:

  • Demonstrated success in a leadership role at an CODA accredited academic institution.
  • Experience in strategic planning.
  • Experience with the Commission on Dental Accreditation standards and accreditation process.
  • Commitment to excellence in the creation and implementation of academic programs.
  • Capacity to actively engage as well as listen to and understand the needs of students, faculty and staff.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Intellectual vision, high levels of energy, collaborative spirit, mission-minded, and impeccable integrity.
  • Collaborative and respectful approach toward students, other college leaders, faculty and staff.
  • An alignment with the College’s core mission to improve the oral health of Kentuckians by serving underserved and vulnerable populations.
  • A history of demonstrating strong character, collegiality, and outstanding integrity.

Relationships:

This position requires daily contact with co-workers, student workers, supervisor, college and university personnel, and students. These relationships are maintained through email, Zoom/Teams meetings, telephone, written, and person-to-person contact.

Responsibility for Final Decisions: 

Tasks involve interpretation of data and/or procedures to address problems or situations that are not clearly defined. Tasks may require the development of techniques, formulation of concepts, and developing solutions to unique issues. Tasks also involve management of programs, work units, and/or responsibility for analysis of major organizational programs and/or major problems. Work involves non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures. It may involve developing, implementing, and interpreting policy in order to fulfill problem resolutions. Work may involve formulating policies and procedures which have significant impact on administration, budget, decisions, and long-term policy.

Reports to: The Dean

Work is performed independently, and the employee assumes direct accountability for work and independently resolves all associated problems except where final approval is required.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Must have the credentials to receive a faculty appointment at the College. 
  • Demonstrate leadership and administrative experience, abilities and qualities to manage clinical dental programs at an academic institution.
  • Continue to develop professionally and personally to grow their own leadership abilities.
  • A minimum of three years leadership experience as an academic program leader.
  • Experience managing budgets and personnel.
  • Ability to communicate and develop relationships/partnerships within the University and surrounding community.
  • Alignment with the University of Pikeville mission.
  • Ability to embrace diversity to best serve a growing higher education community.
  • Ability to promote and support excellence and innovation.
  • Must obtain a license to practice Dentistry within the State of Kentucky within 12 months of appointment to the Faculty.
