Associate Dean of Osteopathic Medical Education

The University of Pikeville and Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) is seeking an Associate Dean of Osteopathic Medical Education. KYCOM is ranked #2 by US News and World Report in medical schools with the most graduates practicing in rural areas and #2 in medical schools with the most graduates in practicing primary care. With nearly 550 students, faculty and staff are committed to teaching and learning, innovation, and the success of medical education. 

Under the supervision, and directly reporting to the Dean of KYCOM, this person has overall responsibility for the clinical curriculum in years 1 and 2 and oversight of the Clinical Skills Training and Evaluation Center.

Responsibilities:

  1. Oversees Clinical Curriculum in KYCOM years 1 and 2.
  2. Teaches clinical skills in first- and second-year medical student courses.
  3. Prepares and recommends a departmental budget.
  4. Develops and oversees Clinical Skills Training and Evaluation Center.
  5. Implements Standardized Patient/simulation programs in collaboration with the KYCOM Director of Simulation. 
  6. Coordinates with KYCOM representative to the Interprofessional Education (IPE) collaboration.
  7. Coordinates scheduling of KYCOM faculty clinical duties at Pikeville Medical Center.
  8. Supervises and evaluates all clinical discipline heads and clinical courses, including but not limited to:
    • Family Medicine
    • Pediatrics
    • Neurology
    • Internal Medicine
    • Surgery
    • Ob-Gyn
    • Psychiatry
  9. Coordinates with Clinical Course Directors to select clinical texts, equipment and clinical simulators.
  10. Assists in the preparation of materials and documentation required for Accreditation.
  11. Collaborates in Faculty Development programs for clinical adjunct faculty.
  12. Provides counseling, mentoring, and guidance to students.
  13. Performs clinical duties at Pikeville Medical Center as directed.
  14. Attends Commencement, White Coat Ceremony, new student orientation, and University of Pikeville Opening Convocation.
  15. Assists in the selection of students to attend KYCOM.
  16. Establishes mutual respect with faculty, staff, and students through effective and timely communication including expectations, deadlines, and feedback on work completed.
  17. Serves on assigned Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM), Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO), and University of Pikeville committees.
  18. Responsible for other duties as assigned by the KYCOM Dean.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Earned DO degree from an American Osteopathic Association-COCA accredited college of osteopathic medicine.
  • Board Certified by an AOA-BOS or ABMS member board.
  • Current and unrestricted medical license issued by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure (KBML) or eligibility for such.
  • Current and unrestricted DEA certificate or eligibility for such.
  • Previous experience in academic medicine, preferably at a college of osteopathic medicine. 
  • Proven leadership and management qualifications.

  • Must have current knowledge and skills in utilizing Microsoft Office Applications, including but not limited to Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Must be able to learn and utilize Learning Management Systems such as Canvas; and the University online platform and systems.
  • Must demonstrate cooperation, courtesy, and consideration when working with professional community, KYCOM, KYCO and UPIKE communities, faculty, students, and the public.
  • Must be able to work independently and also as a member of a team.
  • Alignment with the University of Pikeville and KYCOM missions.

Relationships:

The position requires daily professional contact with faculty, staff, supervisor, campus departments, and students. These relationships are maintained through e-mail, telephone, and person-to-person contact.
