Graduate Assistant-Outdoor Recreation Coordinator

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE), is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Graduate Assistant for Outdoor Recreation Coordinator. Duties to include developing, implementing, and managing outdoor recreational activities and programs for students and the campus community. This position is also responsible for overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of outdoor recreational facilities and equipment. The ideal candidate must have experience in planning and executing outdoor recreational activities and be passionate about promoting physical fitness and wellness.

Responsibilities:

  1.  Plan, organize, and implement a variety of outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, camping, kayaking, rock climbing, fishing, and other outdoor adventures.
  2.  Develop and manage the department’s outdoor recreation program, including trip planning, equipment rental, and facility reservations.
  3.  Assist with program development, record keeping and management of files and forms.
  4.  Assist in designing and implementing Outdoor Leader Training program.
  5.  Recruit, train, and supervise student staff members to assist with outdoor recreational activities and programs, including leadership retreats.
  6.  Assist with maintaining outdoor recreational facilities, including equipment, vehicles, and trails, and ensure they are in good condition and safe for use.
  7. mm Assist with marketing and promoting the outdoor recreation program to the campus community through various channels, including social media, flyers, and other promotional materials.
  8.  Work with the Center for Student Engagement to develop and manage the department's budget for the outdoor recreation program.
  9.  Ensure compliance with all university policies and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations related to outdoor recreational activities.
  10.  Serve on committees both within the Center for Student Engagement and across campus. Develop and foster relationships with other campus departments, student organizations, and community partners.
  11.  Attending professional networking opportunities, workshops, training, retreats, and any other departmental or divisional gatherings.
  12.  Other duties as assigned by the Center for Student Engagement. 

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with co-workers, students, supervisor, employees of the institution, as well as vendors in order to answer questions, place orders and make sure paperwork is completed. These relationships are maintained through e-mail, fax, telephone, and person-to-person contact.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  •  Must have a minimum of bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  •  Ability to work evenings/nights and weekends.
  •  Previous experience working in event setup or related field is preferred.
  •  Work effectively under pressure and/or stringent schedules and produce accurate results in a fast-paced environment.
  •  Experience with training, supervising, and working with students for evaluation.
  •  Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification and other necessary certifications related to outdoor recreation.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to hike, climb, and engage in other physical activities related to outdoor recreation.

**Graduate Assistants receive tuition waivers of up to 6 hours of classes per semester, housing & a meal plan. However, if the GA does not reside on campus, then he/she will receive a monthly stipend in lieu of room & board. The meal plan covers the actual number of weeks that classes are in session during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
