Learning Specialist

The University of Pikeville is seeking a Learning Specialist for the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine Office of Student Affairs and Academic Excellence. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Educational Support, the Learning Specialist is responsible for ensuring support in the areas of academic skills and academic advising programs to all medical students. A successful candidate will have demonstrated achievement as an academic advisor or similar learning support role in higher education. The work will entail training, advising, and support in the areas of adult learning, remediation, academic enhancement, time management, knowledge organization, and testing skills.

Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with students to provide guidance and develop individual study plans to address learning skills, time and study management, knowledge organization, and testing skills/preparation.
  2. Meet regularly with academically at-risk students to develop strategies aimed at improving scholastic achievement and board examination performance.
  3. Facilitate programs that support academic success, student retention, and individualized support throughout the curriculum.
  4. Maintain a reliable schedule of office hours for scheduled and drop-in student advising and consultations. Occasional work on evenings and weekends to support department initiatives may be required.
  5. Develop and deliver group presentations and workshops for students on relevant academic support issues.
  6. Assist in management of the Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program (OMSP) for undergraduate students.
  7. Be knowledgeable of current trends and new technologies in health care education to collaborate with faculty and administration to promote academic success.
  8. Provide referrals to other internal and external services such as disability resources, mental health resources, career advising, and medical consultation as appropriate.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with students, co-workers, supervisor, administrators, faculty, and staff to advise and promote student success and retention. These relationships are maintained through email, telephone, online meetings, and person-to-person contact.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned Master's degree or bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, with 2+ years of experience in education, counseling, student affairs, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
  • Experience with computerized systems.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
  • Proven problem-solving skills and strong self-initiative.
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills and commitment to teamwork.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with medical, doctoral, or graduate-level education.
  • Understanding of standardized examinations that apply to osteopathic medical students.
  • Awareness of recruitment, retention, and persistence issues related to students from diverse cultural, educational, and geographic backgrounds.
  • Experience in conducting educational workshops.
  • Capacity to work in highly structured environments.
  • Understanding of applicable federal and state laws pertaining to students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy, and productivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively address complex and sensitive issues pertaining to students.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex policies and procedures to others.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important.
  • Possess a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
