Athletic Director

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) is a rapidly growing, comprehensive university with an undergraduate college, growing graduate programs, and three (3) professional schools. UPIKE seeks a dynamic and innovative leader for its 25 athletic teams and coaching staff who understands how to leverage the unique opportunities for growth and advancement at the university and, in addition, fosters high standards of integrity, athletic excellence, and academic success. 

Responsibilities:

  1.  Oversee the operation of UPIKE’s intercollegiate athletic program, which includes 25 athletic teams and other Athletics staff.
  2.  Envision and serve as a key leader in development, planning, and fundraising for the new University-wide Athletics complex (Bear Mountain).
  3.  Oversee the recruitment and retention of student-athletes to meet roster expectations.
  4.  Develop and work to align the mission, vision, and goals for the Athletics Department that ensures the care, safety, well-being, integrity, and competitive success for all student-athletes representing UPIKE.
  5.  Supervise athletics facilities and monitor transportation for all team travel.
  6.  Coordinate the preparation of the Athletics Department budget and then monitor its implementation.
  7.  Hire, mentor, guide, and evaluate coaching and athletics staff.
  8.  Support coaching staff and ensure there is a culture of mutual respect and collegiality on and off-campus within the community.
  9.  Provide orientation and training to coaches and student-athletes.
  10.  Comply with all rules and regulations set forth by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC), and UPIKE as well as serve as the UPIKE liaison.
  11.  Lead UPIKE hosted post-conference playoff events; coordinate and supervise all home athletic events.
  12.  Ensure the Athletics Department is in compliance with Title IX and AAC requirements.
  13.  Must adhere to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) laws to respect the confidentiality and privacy of coaches, staff, and students.
  14.  Serves as the Athletics Department’s main liaison with various constituents.
  15.  Oversee and review all game and practice scheduling.
  16.  Coordinate selection and presentation of individual and team awards.
  17.  Collaborate with the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) to monitor eligibility of student-athletes.
  18.  Oversee and manage all athletic scholarships.
  19.  Other duties as assigned.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with all UPIKE coaches, supervisor, various campus departments, student-athletes, and parents in order to communicate information about the Athletic programs offered at the institution. These relationships are maintained through email, telephone, text messaging, and person-to-person contact. In addition, the position will interact with trustees by attending periodic trustee and committee meetings.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Athletics, Business, or related field required, Master’s preferred.
  • At least 3-5 years’ experience working on budgets and preferably coaching.  Possess diplomacy and the ability to use good discretion with confidential student information.
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with students/parents/families and collaborate effectively with campus partners.
  • Must demonstrate effective leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making.
  • Dispute resolution skills and experience in conflict-resolution.
  • Must be able to travel.
