Behavioral Health Therapist

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) is actively seeking candidates for a Behavioral Health Therapist to provide clinical services to graduate, professional, and undergraduate students. The therapist provides assessments, consultation, treatment, and referral services regarding psychological, behavioral, and emotional concerns of graduate, professional, and undergraduate students. In addition, the therapist serves as an advocate for belonging and cross-cultural understanding to create a welcoming campus and serves as a mental health resource for the campus community.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide individual assessment, counseling, and group counseling to students seeking assistance with personal, psychological, and/or interpersonal problems.
  2. Provide support and treatment for students whose personal, psychological, and/or interpersonal concerns are interfering with their functioning as students and as members of UPIKE community.
  3. Provide crisis counseling for students presenting with acute psychological distress.
  4. Present psycho-educational programming to the campus community promoting personal, interpersonal, and psychological health.
  5. Provide consultation to faculty, staff, administrators, and other concerned individuals regarding issues of student mental health.
  6. Advocate for student needs as assessed that may not be fully met by the institution.
  7. Collaborate with other campus services to provide a fulfilling college experience for students.
  8. Develop and demonstrate cultural competencies, and awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and respectful university community.
  9. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students, and visitors to the University.
  10. Abide by professional ethical guidelines and comply with federal and state law as it relates to the professional practice of psychology, social work, or mental health counseling.
  11. Rotating and on-call hours may be required.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisors, students and external company personnel in to discuss collaborative efforts, give support, offer direction, and generally share information. These relationships are maintained through email, telephone, text, and person-to-person contact.

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree (MSW, MA, MS, M.Ed.) in Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, or another related behavioral health field is preferred.
  • Must hold an active and unrestricted license as a mental health provider in Kentucky (LCSW, MFT, OR LPCC). CSW under supervision will be considered. Out-of-state licensed providers are encouraged to apply but must be able to meet Kentucky requirements for licensure.
  • Keen sensitivity to issues of gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientations, disabilities, socioeconomic status.
  • Skilled with techniques for counseling students with diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated a history of positive working relations and collaborative style, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Clinical skills and proven managerial skills with a continuing interest in professional development around current practices and trends.
  • Demonstrate generalist skills with experience with common presenting concerns of college students.
  • Demonstrates interest, expertise, and commitment to working with students from underrepresented groups through culturally competent counseling and programming.
