Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Assessment - KYCO

The University of Pikeville seeks an experienced, visionary leader to serve as its Assistant Dean of Curriculum and Assessment in the Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO). The Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Assessment (ADCUA) is responsible for refining and enhancing the didactic curriculum for the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Optometry. The ADCUA advises the Dean on improvements and enhancements of didactic assessments both summative and formative. The ADCUA shall look for innovative ways to enhance the student experience and education through adjustments to the curriculum or other opportunities. The ADCUA establishes a review of the assessment processes within the KYCO curriculum as well as curricular delivery. The ADCUA coordinates events to enhance student preparedness for assessments in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Educational Support for KYCO. The ADCUA promotes and believes in the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Optometry mission statement to educate and prepare future leaders in optometry through innovative education and a commitment to caring for the underserved.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Engages methods and clinical faculty in the development and implementation of mastery curriculum and rubrics.
  2. Develops a program to review assessments and delivery of education at KYCO.
  3. Keep the Administrative Team informed of legal issues, educational trends, and curriculum development throughout the year.
  4. Serves as a resource for developing and enhancing assessments and delivery of content.
  5. Working knowledge of associated health professions.
  6. Regularly reviews syllabi for standardization and works with the EPCC to establish a current preferred template.
  7. Develop curriculum that maximizes the student experience while ensuring faculty workload is maintained.
  8. Keep current with emerging trends in clinical education and didactic curriculum.
  9. Arrange and conduct regular meetings of educators to ensure the best student experience.
  10. Communicate executive, educational and administrative goals, objectives, policies and procedures, and concerns to faculty.
  11. Educate students on the importance of diverse clinical experiences.
  12. Assist students with maintenance of the curriculum requirements during times of absence, public health crises, or other unanticipated issues that arise.
  13. Develop students both personally and professionally throughout their entire optometric education experience.
  14. Ensure assignment of balanced clinic rotations for students.
  15. Approve curricular adjustments for students throughout their training.
  16. Arrange and conduct meetings with students at key times throughout their education at KYCO.
  17. Arrange and conduct meetings with faculty to discuss the outcomes of assessment and delivery review.
  18. Review and revise clinical expectation for clinical faculty and students on an annual basis.

Relationships:

This position requires daily contact with co-workers, student workers, supervisor, college and university personnel, and students. These relationships are maintained through email, Zoom/Teams meetings, telephone, written, and person-to-person contact.

Requirements: 

  • Must have an O.D. and/or Ph.D. (or equivalent) in a discipline related to optometry or its associated basic sciences.
  • Optometrist applicants should be eligible for licensure in the state of Kentucky and are expected to participate in patient care services.
  • Must have excellent organizational, communication, teaching and decision-making skills.
  • Prior college teaching experience is strongly preferred.
