Position Overview: NSF Student Research Position

UPIKE is seeking students to participate in biological research funded by a National Science Foundation Grant. In this competitive position, student researchers will assist with ongoing research efforts in the fields of hydroponic agriculture, mycology (fungi), and molecular biology. While a background in the biological sciences would be helpful, it is not a requirement. We welcome enthusiastic applicants from all academic backgrounds and students will be given research training once accepted. This is a 12-month funded position, with online work available during summer/winter breaks.

Responsibilities and Career Competencies:

1. • Assist with day-to-day research activities, which includes but is not limited to: Cleaning the lab and materials, operating the autoclave, sterile benchtop lab work, routine maintenance of hydroponic bucket systems. (C, TW, P, CSD, CT, L, T)
   • Maintain plants being grown in hydroponic systems as well as root preparation when we are ready to test. (C, T, P, CSD)
   • Assist with literature reviews for related topics. (C, TW, L)
   • Prepare documents/research papers. (C, P, CSD, EI, T)
   • Perform technical lab skills such as PCR and DNA analysis. (T, CSD, C, P)
   • Help disseminate information gathered by presenting findings in oral and/or written forms. (C, T, P, EI, CT, L)

Qualifications:

1. Enrollment in a College/University: Applicants must be currently enrolled as a college student, preferably in fields related to biology, agriculture, environmental science, entrepreneurship or a related discipline.
2. Passion for Apiculture: Demonstrated interest in beekeeping, pollinators, and sustainable agriculture.
3. Physical Fitness: The position involves outdoor work, including lifting beehives and bending while inspecting hives. Candidates must be physically fit and able to work in various weather conditions. Lifting up to 50 pounds as a team may be required occasionally.
4. Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail is essential for accurate data collection and hive inspection.
5. Team Player: Willingness to work collaboratively with the faculty mentor and other team members.
6. Punctuality and Reliability: Be punctual and dependable in meeting work schedules and commitments.

Safety Conscious: Knowledge of safety protocols related to beekeeping or a willingness to learn and follow safety guidelines.

Applicant should not have a known allergy to bee stings. 

Student worker will be working with or interacting with faculty, staff, students, prospective students, alumni and campus visitors. 

Computer Skills:  Work, Excel, Power Point, Social Media and New Technology

Skills needed:  Attention to detail, strong active listening abiities, public speaking, written and verbal communication, willingness to learn new things.

Work Schedule:  5 hours a week per position days/time will vary 

Working Conditions and employee encounters while perform the essential function of this job:  heat, cold, odors/smoke, wetness, humidity, dust

Physical Demands to successfully perfor the essential functions of this job:  reaching/handling, stooping/kneeling, crouching/crawling, pushing up to 50 lbs, pulling up to 50 lbs, lifting up to 50 lbs, carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing, balancing.  Pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying heavier weights will be done as a team.

Pay Rate: $10.50 for up to 381 hours ($4,000) a year
