FWS - Biology - Biology Horticulture Support and Research FWSBIOHRTSPRSH - Fall/Spring 24/25

Position Overview: We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic college student to work on apiary-related tasks under the mentorship of faculty members and experienced professionals. This position offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in horticulture while collaborating closely with experienced mentors. The college student will play a vital role in supporting the faculty member's research and educational initiatives related to apiculture.

Responsibilities and Career Competencies:

  1. Assist with Horticulture Management: Work alongside faculty members and experienced professionals in day-to-day horticulture operations, including but not limited to inspection, maintenance, and monitoring of horticulture. (C ) (TW) (P) (CSD) (CT) (L)
  2. Data Collection and Recording: Help collect and document data on horticulture with relevant metrics. Maintain accurate records of activities and outcomes. (C ) (TW) (P) (CSD) (CT) (L) (T)
  3. Research Support: Contribute to ongoing research projects. This may involve conducting literature reviews, assisting in experimental setups, and helping with data analysis. (C ) (TW) (P) (CSD) (CT) (L) (T)
  4. Educational Outreach: Support educational programs and workshops related to horticulture. This may involve helping with presentations, workshops, and demonstrations for students or the broader community. (C ) (TW) (P) (CSD) (CT) (L) (T)

Qualifications:

  1. Enrollment in a College/University: Applicants must be currently enrolled as a college student, preferably in fields related to biology, agriculture, environmental science, entrepreneurship or a related discipline.
  2. Passion for Apiculture: Demonstrated interest in beekeeping, pollinators, and sustainable agriculture.
  3. Physical Fitness: The position involves outdoor work, including lifting beehives and bending while inspecting hives. Candidates must be physically fit and able to work in various weather conditions. Lifting up to 50 pounds as a team may be required occasionally.
  4. Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail is essential for accurate data collection and hive inspection.
  5. Team Player: Willingness to work collaboratively with the faculty mentor and other team members.
  6. Punctuality and Reliability: Be punctual and dependable in meeting work schedules and commitments.

Safety Conscious: Knowledge of safety protocols related to beekeeping or a willingness to learn and follow safety guidelines.

Applicant should not have a known allergy to bee stings. 

Student worker will be working with or interacting with faculty, staff, students, prospective students, alumni and campus visitors. 

Computer Skills:  Work, Excel, Power Point, Social Media and New Technology

Skills needed:  Attention to detail, strong active listening abiities, public speaking, written and verbal communication, willingness to learn new things.

Work Schedule:  5 hours a week per position days/time will vary on apiary needs.  10 hours a week may be needed during honey harvests (typically April and September)

Working Conditions and employee encounters while perform the essential function of this job:  heat, cold, odors/smoke, wetness, humidity, dust

Physical Demands to successfully perfor the essential functions of this job:  reaching/handling, stooping/kneeling, crouching/crawling, pushing up to 50 lbs, pulling up to 50 lbs, lifting up to 50 lbs, carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing, balancing.  Pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying heavier weights will be done as a team.
